Kingfisher Company, inc recently completed the installation of a radio fire alarm system to protect the new NCE Campus at Ft. Belvoir, VA. . The Main Office Building (MOB) is the third largest facility in the Department of Defense inventory; only the Reagan Office Building and the Pentagon are larger. This facility is one of six located on this 130 acre campus setting constructed with Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) funds. KCi had installed the Radio Fire & Emergency system base-wide at Fort Belvoir. When the award for the internal fire alarm and mass notification system was given to Life Safety Systems of Manassas, VA, KCi was asked to engineer its Addressable Radio Fire Alarm Transmitter (KFAPT) to work with the GE EST3 Fire/MNS System. This was designed to be a networked NCE Campus System. Campus-wide the total number of Fire Alarm Control Panels (FACPs) is forty-three, of which twenty-four are in the MOB. KCi engineered eight KFAPT transmitters to form the transmission link back to the Fort Belvoir Fire & Emergency Dispatch centers. The information stream is processed by a KCi Computer Aided Dispatch system where it is translated into Fire & Emergency dispatch “Run Cards.” These cards are related to each of the thousands of actuating devices on the Campus and this information spells out to the Dispatchers what kind of Fire & Emergency Service is needed. The Main Office Building is the single largest networked system that KCi and GE EST3 have ever done.

Upon completion of the MOB, Factory Mutual Approvals was contracted to do a Site Survey, after which they issued a Certificate of Compliance, with a supporting document stating that the KCi transmitters and the EST3 networked System had been tested and shown to work together at this site. Subsequent FM Approvals testing was done on all of the other facilities constructed on the site.

This project demonstrates that KCi has the ability to integrate with others to bring about a satisfactory completion to a very complex situation.
